Our people

Philippe joined PIDG as Chief Executive Officer in 2014. He has 30 years of international experience in emerging markets infrastructure project and export finance and risk management in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
Prior to joining PIDG, Philippe was one of the founding partners of an EM infrastructure finance advisory firm and before that worked for Depfa Bank’s infrastructure finance unit. Philippe spent 13 years at the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (World Bank Group) in Washington and Singapore, where he headed the guarantees department and was global head of infrastructure. Philippe’s infrastructure experience covers power, renewables, water, transportation, and social infrastructure.
He attended Harvard University’s Business School Executive Program and holds an MBA in International Business and a Bachelor’s degree from George Washington University.

Philippe Valahu

Mike joined PIDG as CFO in February 2018. He is a non-executive member of the Boards of InfraCo Africa and InfraCo Asia, as well as an attendee at the PIDG Ltd. Audit and Risk Committees. Before joining PIDG, Mike was the Finance Director at Cenkos Securities, a UK-listed institutional stockbroker. Before that, he was the Finance and Risk Director at NS&amp;I (National Savings &amp; Investments). Mike spent a number of years at PwC in the financial services practice. Mike’s career also includes 10 years at Standard Chartered, where he held roles including Chief Financial Officer for the Africa Region and Group Head of Operational Risk. He is also the chair of the UK pension fund of Sightsavers.

Mike Chilton

Emilio joined PIDG in 2015 as Executive Director of The Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, becoming Head of TA in December 2019. He has over 35 years of corporate finance, asset management and advisory experience across several markets, including Africa, Latin America, India and Southern Europe. He spent close to 20 years with HSBC in the UK and abroad. Subsequently, he worked in a number of smaller firms, including an advisory M&amp;A boutique that he founded and ran for 7 years and in a commodity brokerage firm focused on emerging markets, including Africa. Before joining PIDG, Emilio was Director of Asset Management, at Climate Change Capital, a London-based fund manager focused on climate mitigation investment strategies, where he was closely involved in developing renewable energy and agri-business transactions in Africa. A graduate of the University of Oxford, he read Biochemistry (with Economics) at Hertford College.

Emilio Cattaneo

Marco provides leadership on driving sustainable development impact across PIDG companies. He oversees the early stage impact assessment of all PIDG investments, the process for monitoring and evaluating their impact and PIDG programmatic work to deepen sustainable development impact including on gender and climate.
Marco has over 15 years of experience working in frontier markets to drive development impact through private investment. He joined PIDG from the UK Department for International Development where he most recently led their Impact Investing team. In previous DFID roles, he was responsible for UK support to AgDevCo, developed public private partnerships with corporate investors in Africa, and led market reform initiatives to enable investment and development impact in the agri-food sector. He previously worked in management consultancy with assignments for corporates and multilateral organisations. He held leadership positions with social enterprises in West and East Africa and worked in business development services and policy in the UK. Marco spent 10 years between Sierra Leone, Uganda, Tanzania, and Albania and conducted assignments in a number of other countries. He holds a BSc in International Politics and Economics from the University of Naples, an MSc in Development Studies from SOAS in London, and an associate membership of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

Marco Serena

Tim Streeter joined PIDG in September 2019 from Deutsche Pfandbriefbank AG (pbb) London, where he was Head of Loan Markets in the bank’s Public Investment Finance Team. He led the bank’s syndication activities and successfully established and maintained relationships with both banks and institutional investors, as the bank built a portfolio of infrastructure-related and export credit agency-backed assets. He was also a member of the bank’s new deal committee for Public Investment Finance business and of the London branch’s operating committee. Prior to joining pbb, Tim held various positions in investment banks in the field of debt capital markets in UBS (in both London and Tokyo), Commerzbank (in the field of Emerging Markets) and Mizuho Bank.

Tim Streeter

Cecilie Sørhus, Chief of Staff and Head of Communications, joined PIDG from Xynteo, a consultancy firm advising on and specialising in leadership and sustainability issues.
She was Head of Communications and led the firm’s global communications and brand-building work. Cecilie played an important role in delivering flagship events for Xynteo, leading and developing a global team.
Prior to her role at Xynteo, she worked for the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation, where she drove communications for the UK, the Nordics, and the Middle East, as well as managed Government and partner relations in the Nordics. She has worked for a range of UK Government departments, including the Department for International Development (DFID), where, amongst other priorities, she led communications for the private sector department.

Cecilie Sørhus

Tinashe is a senior lawyer with over 15 years of in-house and top tier law firm experience. As General Counsel at the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG) Tinashe leads the group legal function and is a member of the Executive Team.
Tinashe chairs the Boards of InfraCo Africa and InfraCo Asia.
Before joining PIDG, Tinashe was Chief Legal Officer at SunFunder Inc.,.
Tinashe has previously worked for leading legal practices at Allen &amp; Overy, Norton Rose Fulbright and Trinity International LLP where we advised developers, international banks, development finance institutions, private equity funds and state-owned enterprises in complex, cross-border transactions.
Tinashe obtained an LLB from the University of Cape Town in 2003, qualified in South Africa in 2006 and was admitted to the New York Bar.

Tinashe Makoni

Stephen Varma is the Chief Risk Officer of PIDG and a member of the organisation’s Executive Committee. He heads the overall Risk and Compliance function for the Group and is responsible for the oversight and implementation of strategies, policies and frameworks addressing enterprise, strategic, financial (credit, market, liquidity) and operational risks. Stephen reports to the CEO Philippe Valahu and the Risk Committee of the Board.
Prior to joining PIDG, Stephen held senior risk positions with Rio Tinto Plc and various organisations across the European Rail and Infrastructure sectors. He has over 20 years of experience in emerging markets and OECD jurisdictions, delivering risk management expertise across infrastructure development, commodity trading operations, corporate governance, regulatory compliance and business transformation.
Stephen holds an Executive MBA with the University of Cambridge and a Batchelors in Engineering from Brunel University. He also Chairs the Risk and Audit Committee of a major UK Non-Profit.

Eva Rutkowska

Richie joined PIDG in March 2023 as the Head of Operations and is responsible for the IT, procurement and facilities functions, as well as overseeing internal business change initiatives. Over a 30-year career, Richie has garnered extensive experience in operations, business and people strategy, team leadership and directing business transformation within Defence and professional services.
Richie began his career in the British Army, where he served for 22 years. His personal career highlight came, when he had the privilege of commanding a Squadron of 140 soldiers. He has operational tours in Sierra Leone, Kosovo and Afghanistan (twice) under his belt. During his first tour of Afghanistan, in Kabul in 2002, he was the Operations Director for British Forces, overseeing logistics and engineer resources and spent much of the tour involved in capacity building and infrastructure development activities, such as restoring power, improving sanitation and the construction of schools. On his second tour of Afghanistan, he was part of a mentoring team alongside the USMC, training a nascent Afghan National Army Corps in Helmand Province. His last four years in the Army were in transformation roles in the Ministry of Defence and Army Head Office, leading target operating model, organisational change and operational efficiency programmes alongside the commercial outsourcing of Defence Infrastructure and Services to the private sector.
Since his departure from the Army in 2014, Richie has been leading transformation teams and initiatives in the legal sector. This has centred on business modernisation, by leveraging technology and new ways of working to improve productivity and the end user experience. He also had responsibility for overseeing selection and procurement of services and products, managing suppliers and delivering new operating models and capabilities into the business. He holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration and PRINCE2, Agile PM, APM Practitioner and Lean Six Sigma qualifications.
